character info.
canon: Sanctuary
supplemental: wiki bio

short form: Detective and inventor with genius intellect enhanced by superhuman means, slowly losing everyone he loves one way or another and growing more and more resistant to change in his technologically-assisted enhanced age.

permissions/preferences.
fourth-walling: Yes, but there will be questions. Also, feel free to recognize him as the template for Sherlock Holmes, it will amuse him.
hugging/kissing/flirting: Go for it. James is a little standoffish with people he doesn't know or like, but not likely to react violently or aggressively to most people who aren't outright enemies; he's inclined towards easy hugs and affection with those he considers friends. The older he gets, the more likely he is to lean on people casually when he feels he can get away with it, as well.
fighting/injury: Yes, depending. When young, James is not the best trained fighter, but he is mostly kept in shape by his work and will fight when need be, especially if required for his work, either as a detective or with the Sanctuary. He'll tend to try and get out of them as quickly and efficiently as possible, whether that's taking down his opponent or getting away. The older he gets, the more physically worn he is, even if the life support machine keeps him alive and mostly walking, and the less capable he is of fighting at all. In that time, if he feels reasonably threatened and has a lethal way to handle the threat, he's likely to take it without trying to fight fair; otherwise, he'll avoid fights as much as possible. (And, frankly, fight threads are unlikely to be any fun, so if you want that kind of thing, let's go earlier in the timeline, we still have til at least the 40s to play with.)
supernatural effects: Go for it, however, as he works with creatures with all sorts of abilities, technically isn't human himself, and possess immense superhuman intelligence, there's a very good chance that he'll be able to notice what's being done to him and realize it's coming from an outside source. That said, since his only gift appears to be his intellect, it's unlikely that he can stop it happening. For mind-readers, first of all, there's going to be a lot of input; second, I'll likely go with whatever seems best for the thread and how their psychic abilities work as to whether or not he can feel someone being in his mind, so feel free to discuss with me if you want to figure out how it might work first.
sex: Let's discuss, but I generally prefer fade-to-black. In addition, anything but very young James is going to have issues with the vulnerability of letting somebody close to the machine, so sex is a touchy topic and unlikely to happen outside established relationships.

offensive subjects: I would prefer not to have graphic descriptions of gore sprung on me without warning. James' biggest sore spot is John Druitt and the associated Ripper case, but how he reacts varies wildly depending on who's bringing it up, how much they know, and how they're discussing it. He's also fairly protective of the machine that keeps him alive, and will likely steer around it in conversation with people who don't know his secret.
abilities: Through his and his friends' experiments with the Source Blood, James has gained the gift of enhanced intelligence. He can make outstanding, intuitive leaps in logic that others don't necessarily see. (Think your standard Sherlock Holmes type deductions.) He also has invented the life support machine that kept him alive and relatively youthful, though not necessarily in perfect health, long past his natural lifespan's end.
default canon point: Within a few years of the time of Sanctuary season one with non-canonmates; variable and open to anything with canonmates, especially the Five.
alternate journal: [personal profile] giftforbrevity (Normandy-era)

shipping preferences:
  • Good with M/M, M/F, threesomes/moresomes/polypiles, canon, cross-canon, etc.
  • Canon favorites: Any and all of the Five, in any combinations, the more complexities and the more of them involved the better; Declan.
  • Cross-canon favorite dynamics and types: People who surprise him; intellectual equals; other very long lived types, especially with a streak of old-fashionedness to them; people in a similar line of work to the Sanctuary; people who remind him of members of the Five, though there's likely to be some projection there that turns it into a more complicated relationship, especially if it's Druitt they remind him of; I am weirdly fond of pairing James with cheery, open types, though it'll probably take a while for him to warm up to them.

want ads: Everything with the Five, we've got a lot of ground to cover and canon didn't give us nearly enough. Interacting intermittently with future!Helen post-Tempus. Epistolary threads with Tesla, Helen, or future!Helen. Sanctuary business, whether with canonmates or AU'd Sanctuary workers. Friendly, doting-uncle-like CR with Ashley Magnus. Friendly and possibly mentor-like CR with Henry Foss. Mentor CR in general, with canonmates or cross-canon. Cross-universal meetings with other versions of Holmes and/or Watson, especially more modern ones. Daemon AUs. Werewolf AUs. James survives past Revelations somehow. Younger James gets thrown into the future after his death. Ghost!James haunts either the Sanctuary generally or someone specific after his death. Afterlife reunions with Nigel post-Revelations. Afterlife reunions with Ashley post-End of Nights. Any and all threads I can get where James has to be vulnerable and let somebody else see/handle/clean/work on/help him with the machine, especially in a shippy context, whether established relationship or not. Modern chaotic college AU Five (it's my guilty pleasure AU, what can I say).
